The best AI email assistant depends on whether you want a new client or AI on the inbox you already use. Our picks: Slashy for one plan that drafts, triages, follows up and runs from iMessage or Slack. Superhuman for a fast full client. Fyxer to keep your inbox. Copilot inside Outlook. Gemini inside Gmail. SaneBox for filtering only. Lindy for a general AI teammate.

"AI email assistant" now covers two different kinds of product. Some are full email clients with the assistant built in: you move your mail into a new app and the AI runs inside it. Others sit on the inbox you already have, in Gmail or Outlook, and add drafting, sorting or reminders without changing where you read mail. Which kind you want decides most of the answer before any feature comparison starts.
One disclosure up front: we make Slashy, so it is listed first. Every tool here gets credit for what its vendor documents, and each section says who should pick it instead. Where we could not find a feature on a vendor's public pages, the text says "not documented" rather than claiming it is missing.
What is the best AI email assistant in 2026?
Our picks by need:
- Best for an assistant that drafts, triages, follows up and runs automations in one plan: Slashy. It works with Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook.com, and Microsoft 365, learns your voice from a memory system, and is the only tool here you can run from iMessage or Slack, at $25 to $30 per user per month.
- Best for a fast full client with advanced AI on a higher tier: Superhuman Mail, on Gmail or Outlook, with Ask AI and auto drafts on its Business tier.
- Best for deep AI search on Gmail: Shortwave, with unlimited AI search history on Premier and Max.
- Best for adding drafts and triage without changing clients: Fyxer, a layer on Gmail or Outlook.
- Best inside Outlook for Microsoft 365 companies: Microsoft 365 Copilot, if your organization licenses it.
- Best inside Gmail with nothing new to buy: Gmail with Gemini, included with Google Workspace.
- Best for filtering only, on any provider: SaneBox, which sorts mail into folders and works with every email client.
- Best for an AI teammate that also touches email: Lindy, which works across Slack, iMessage and your inbox.
"Slashy is the first email client that feels AI-native instead of AI-bolted-on."
Nikhil, former Superhuman engineering manager
How did we compare the AI email assistants?
Four questions, in this order:
- Client or layer. Does the assistant replace your email app, or work on top of Gmail or Outlook? A layer is easier to adopt; a client can do more because it controls the whole inbox.
- Provider support. A tool that does not support your provider is not an option. Outlook and Microsoft 365 narrow this list quickly.
- Drafts from your voice or from a prompt. Every tool here except SaneBox writes drafts in some way. The difference is whether the draft is built from your sent mail and connected context, or from what you type into a prompt.
- What it does beyond drafting. Triage, follow-up reminders, calendar, automations, and whether you can run it from outside the inbox.
Prices are per user, USD, read on each vendor's pricing page on the date given next to them. Feature claims link to the vendor page they were checked against.

Full email clients with an AI assistant built in
1. Slashy: one plan that drafts, triages, follows up and runs from your phone
Who it is for: founders, investors and operators who live in their inbox, on Gmail or Outlook, and want the assistant to get sharper over weeks.
Slashy works with Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook.com, and Microsoft 365, on web, the Mac desktop app and iOS. Its memory learns your contacts, preferences and writing style from your sent mail and from whatever you connect: your CRM record for the sender, your last meeting notes with them, your saved notes about the relationship. Drafts are built from that context, which is why the share of AI drafts a new user sends without editing starts near 30% on day one and passes 80% by day 30 on Slashy's own usage data.
The same memory sorts mail into seven importance labels plus custom ones, tracks threads awaiting a reply, shows read status, puts a calendar sidebar with a multi-person view next to your mail, and runs automations you describe in plain English that trigger on incoming email, on a schedule, or before and after meetings. You can read, reply and run those automations from iMessage or Slack, and an MCP server is included for Claude, Cursor and other agents. CRM integrations cover Attio, HubSpot and Salesforce; meeting-note integrations cover Granola, Circleback, Fathom and Fireflies.
Where to look closer: Slashy has no free plan. The 7-day trial of the full plan requires a card, and you can cancel before it ends. It is cloud-only and not HIPAA certified. Drafts take a week or two to match your voice, so expect to edit early on.
Pricing: $30 per user per month, or $25 per month on the $300 annual plan, one tier with everything included. Security: SOC 2 Type II, CASA Tier 2, AES-256 at rest, TLS in transit, no AI training on your data and zero data retention from AI providers (Slashy security).
2. Superhuman Mail: a fast full client for Gmail and Outlook
Who it is for: people on Gmail or Outlook who want a fast, keyboard-driven client and will budget for the Business tier to get its most advanced AI.
Superhuman Mail is a full client on desktop, web and mobile for Gmail and Outlook. Its AI drafts "match the voice and tone in the emails you've already sent", with personalization settings for tone, greeting and scheduling on Business and Enterprise (Superhuman Personalization, checked September 5, 2026). Ask AI searches your inbox, calendar and the web across five years of email on Business and Enterprise (Superhuman Ask AI, checked September 5, 2026). It runs Auto Labels and Auto Archive, flags unanswered threads and drafts the follow-up, shows read status down to the device, and puts Google and Outlook calendars in the inbox (Superhuman Mail AI, checked September 5, 2026).
Where to look closer: Ask AI, auto drafts, custom auto labels, MCP and CRM integrations sit on Business, so the price to compare is Business at $33 a month on annual billing (Superhuman pricing, checked October 27, 2026). Control from iMessage or Slack is not documented on its Mail product pages.
Pricing: Starter $30 per member per month or $25 billed annually; Business $40 or $33 billed annually; Enterprise custom. See the Superhuman review and Superhuman alternatives in 2026.
3. Shortwave: the deepest AI search for Gmail users
Who it is for: Gmail and Google Workspace users and teams who want AI search across years of history.
Shortwave is a full client built on Gmail. Personalized AI writing is listed on every tier, AI search covers five years of history on Business and unlimited history on Premier and Max, and AI filters scale from 3 on Business to 50 on Max (Shortwave pricing, checked October 27, 2026). Follow-up reminders, read statuses and calendar integration are listed on its pricing page, and it lists CASA Tier 2.
Where to look closer: Shortwave is Gmail only, so Outlook and Microsoft 365 users are out. Team tiers are billed per seat per month, and the tiers buy more AI usage and history, so the plan you need grows with how much you use the AI.
Pricing: Free plan and Pro $18 for individuals (read October 13, 2026); Business $30, Premier $45, Max $120 per seat per month (read October 27, 2026). See Slashy vs Shortwave.
Slashy uses the context in your email and calendar to draft, schedule, remember, and follow through.
AI assistants that work on the inbox you already have
4. Fyxer: drafts and triage on Gmail or Outlook
Who it is for: people who want their existing inbox sorted and replies drafted, without switching clients.
Fyxer is an assistant layer on Gmail or Outlook. Its Pro plan includes "Replies drafted in your tone and automatic labeling", plus notes for every meeting and a drafted follow-up email after each one (Fyxer pricing, checked October 27, 2026). Because it is a layer, there is nothing new to learn and nothing to migrate.
Where to look closer: the Free plan covers a daily briefing, a follow-up list and audio meeting notes, but not drafted replies or inbox labelling, which start on Pro. There is no calendar sidebar or messaging control because there is no client.
Pricing: Free; Pro $49 monthly or $37 on annual billing; Team $99 monthly or $64 annual. See Slashy vs Fyxer and Fyxer alternatives.
5. Microsoft 365 Copilot: the native assistant inside Outlook
Who it is for: companies standardized on Microsoft 365 that already license Copilot or plan to.
Microsoft's Copilot in Outlook FAQ lists prioritizing your inbox, email triage actions, summaries, Draft with Copilot and Coaching by Copilot, across Outlook on Windows, Mac, the web and mobile (checked October 6, 2026). It is the most native option for an Outlook shop: your add-ins, shared mailboxes and calendar stay exactly as they are.
Where to look closer: the FAQ does not say Copilot learns your personal writing style, so drafts start from your prompt and the thread. It needs a Microsoft 365 Copilot license on top of a Microsoft 365 plan.
Pricing: Microsoft 365 Copilot Business is $21 per user per month paid yearly, shown at a promotional $18 for the first year through December 31, 2026, or $25.20 paid monthly (Microsoft 365 Copilot pricing, checked October 27, 2026). More Outlook options are in the best AI email assistant for Outlook.
6. Gmail with Gemini: built into Gmail with nothing new to buy
Who it is for: teams on Google Workspace who want basic AI help and no new tool.
Gemini in Gmail adds Help me write, thread summaries and AI Overviews in Gmail search, included with eligible Google Workspace plans (Google Workspace pricing, checked October 13, 2026). Priority Inbox and categories handle basic triage, and Google Calendar sits in the side panel.
Where to look closer: Help me write is prompt-based and does not learn from your sent mail, so drafts read the same in month two as on day one. Filters and rules are the only automation, and it is Gmail by definition.
Pricing: Google Workspace Business Starter from $7 per user per month on an annual plan, with Gemini included. See Slashy vs Gmail with Gemini and the best Gmail AI assistant.
7. Lindy: an AI teammate that also works in your inbox
Who it is for: people who want one AI assistant across Slack, iMessage, meetings and email, and are comfortable paying by usage.
Lindy's pricing page lists "Drafts replies in your voice" and inbox management, a memory it describes as "Remembers you. Yours to edit.", and 2 to 5 connected inboxes depending on plan (checked October 27, 2026). Its homepage says it works in Slack threads, over iMessage and in your inbox, and connects to Gmail and a long list of other tools. It states SOC 2 and GDPR compliance, with HIPAA and a signed BAA on Enterprise.
Where to look closer: Lindy is a general assistant rather than an email client, so you still read mail in Gmail. Usage is metered in credits, so the monthly cost depends on how much work it does. Support for providers other than Gmail is not stated on the pages we read.
Pricing: Free with $50 in credits that last 7 days, no card; Team $49.99 a month for 5,000 credits, with larger credit tiers and top-ups at $10 per 1,000 credits. See Slashy vs Lindy.
8. SaneBox: AI filtering that works with any email client
Who it is for: people who mainly want less clutter, on any provider, and do not need drafts.
SaneBox sorts mail you do not need to see right away into folders such as SaneLater, sends a Daily Digest, and adds tools like SaneNoReplies for threads waiting on a reply, reminders and custom snooze (SaneBox pricing, checked October 27, 2026). It works with Gmail, Microsoft 365, Apple iCloud, Yahoo Mail, Fastmail and any IMAP, Exchange or ActiveSync server, and with every email client, because it works through folders rather than a new app.
Where to look closer: AI drafting is not documented on its pricing page or homepage, so SaneBox is a filter, not a writer. Lower tiers let you pick a set number of its features: 2 on Snack and 6 on Lunch.
Pricing: Snack $9.49, Lunch $15.99 and Dinner $42.99 per month on monthly billing, or $4.54, $7.46 and $22.04 a month billed every two years, for 1, 2 and 4 email accounts. There is a 7-day free trial.
Which AI email assistant drafts replies in your voice?
Slashy, Superhuman, Shortwave, Fyxer and Lindy all state that they draft in your voice or tone. Superhuman's help pages say its AI matches the voice and tone of emails you have already sent, Shortwave lists personalized AI writing on every tier, Fyxer lists replies drafted in your tone on Pro, and Lindy lists drafts in your voice. Copilot and Gemini draft from a prompt and the thread, and neither documents learning your personal style. SaneBox does not draft.
The practical test during a trial is the same for all of them: send the drafts instead of rewriting them, count how many you had to change, and watch whether that number falls over two weeks. Slashy's drafts also pull in connected CRM records, meeting notes and saved memories about the relationship. Read how AI learns your writing voice from sent emails for the mechanics.

For an Outlook-only shortlist, see the best AI email assistant for Outlook.
Is there a free AI email assistant?
Partly. Shortwave and Fyxer have free plans, though Fyxer's does not include drafted replies. Lindy's free plan is $50 in credits that last 7 days.
