Free AI Email Client in 2026: What You Get

Is there a free AI email client? Spark, Fyxer, Canary and Shortwave all have free tiers in 2026, but the AI mostly sits behind the paywall. Here is the split.

TL;DR

Yes, several email clients have a free plan in 2026: Spark, Canary Mail, Fyxer and Shortwave. In every case the free tier gives you the client, and the AI that drafts replies and sorts mail is on a paid plan or a limited preview. Slashy has no free plan, only a 7-day trial that needs a card.

Free AI Email Client in 2026: What You Get

"Free" in this category means two different things, and mixing them up is how people end up with an email app they like and no AI in it. This page separates what each free tier actually includes from what it points you toward. We build Slashy, which does not have a free plan, so we say so up front and rank nobody. Every vendor claim below was read on the vendor's own site and is linked, with the date we read it.

Is there a free AI email client?

Not one that gives you the full AI for nothing. What exists is four clients with a free tier where the AI is cut down:

ClientWhat the free plan includesAI on the free planCheapest plan with the full AI
SparkSmart Inbox, unlimited accounts, smart notifications, calendarA limited preview of the AI Assistant, with no way to buy more when the quota runs outPlus, $10 a month or $99 billed annually
Canary MailUnified inbox, lite read receipts, snooze, templates, up to 2 devicesInbox prioritization into tabs onlyGrowth, $3 a month or $36 a year
FyxerDaily and weekly briefings, follow-up list, meeting notesNo tone-matched drafts, no inbox labellingPro, $49 a month or $37 billed annually
ShortwaveGmail client with AI search over a short historySearch over 90 days of historyPro, $18 a month

Sources: Spark pricing, Canary Mail pricing and Fyxer pricing, all read October 6, 2026. Shortwave's Free and Pro lines come from its pricing page as we last read them on September 22, 2026. The page now opens on a Business tab that starts at $30 a seat, so check the Individual tab before you rely on that row.

Gmail itself belongs on the list too. Google's help page for Gemini in Gmail lists Help me write, Proofread, Suggested replies and email summaries, and says some features roll out gradually and may not have reached your account yet. It drafts from the prompt and the thread in front of it, not from a memory of how you write.

What does a free email client leave out?

The same three things, nearly every time.

Drafts in your own voice come first. Fyxer's free plan excludes automatic replies in your tone, and Spark's free tier only previews its assistant. Writing in your voice needs a model that has read your sent mail, which costs money to run on every account.

Automatic sorting is next. Canary's free plan prioritizes into tabs, while the labelling and summarizing sit on Growth. Fyxer's free plan has no inbox sorting at all.

Last is the volume. Fyxer's free plan carries 400 credits a month, which its page equates to about 20 chat messages. That is enough to see how the assistant answers and not enough to depend on it.

An inbox that understands the next step

Slashy uses the context in your email and calendar to draft, schedule, remember, and follow through.

Which free tier is worth using?

It depends on what you are trying to fix.

If your problem is too many accounts in too many apps, Spark's free tier is the strongest. Unlimited accounts and a Smart Inbox cost nothing, and the AI you skip is not what you came for. Our unified inbox roundup covers that case in detail.

If you want to try the AI before paying, Canary's trial is the most generous we found: its page says the 7-day trial needs no credit card and includes all paid features before dropping you to the free plan. Growth is then $3 a month, which makes it the cheapest route to a working AI writing assistant on this list.

If you live in meetings, Fyxer's free plan gives you meeting notes and a daily briefing, and a 14-day Pro trial to see the drafting. Credits are the thing to watch once the trial ends.

If you search your mail more than you write it, Shortwave's free plan is the place to test whether AI search suits you, on Gmail only.

Why does Slashy not have a free plan?

Because the part that makes Slashy different does not show up in a free tier. The drafts come from a memory that learns from the mail you send, and on Slashy's own usage data the share of drafts a new user sends without editing climbs from about 30% on day one to over 80% by day 30. A limited preview would show you the day-one number. A 7-day trial shows you the first week of the curve, which is why we ask you to send real mail during it rather than click through the demo.

"I was spending more time orchestrating AI than actually replying. Now I approve more than I compose. It just reads my mind."

Michelle, The Prompting Company

Slashy Professional is $30 per user per month, or $25 billed annually ($300 a year). The 7-day trial needs a credit card to start, and you can cancel before it ends. Slashy works with Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook.com, and Microsoft 365. If a card up front is a dealbreaker, Canary's no-card trial and the free tiers above are the better first stop, and we would rather you know that now.

What to choose if

  • You want a free client and do not care about AI drafting: Spark Free.
  • You want to test an AI writing assistant for the least money: Canary Mail Growth at $3 a month.
  • Your pain is meetings and follow-ups, not the inbox: Fyxer Free, then judge the credits.
  • You want drafts in your own voice across your whole inbox and will pay for it: Slashy, Fyxer Pro or Superhuman. Superhuman has no free plan either; compare the three in our Fyxer review and Spark alternatives guide.
