TL;DR

Spark Mail is a cross-platform client covering Mac, iOS, Android and Windows with a genuine free plan, Plus at $10 and Pro at $20. The five alternatives worth a look are Canary Mail, Shortwave, Slashy, Superhuman and Apple Mail. Which one fits comes down to whether you are leaving for cheaper, for better AI, or because you only ever used Spark on one platform anyway.

Spark Mail Alternatives in 2026: 5 Email Apps Compared

Spark is a good client and this page treats it that way. Its free plan is genuinely free, it runs on four platforms, and it connects to more providers than most of the tools below. Prices here were read from each vendor's own pricing page on the dates stated, and every claim about another vendor links to that vendor's page.

Why look for a Spark Mail alternative?

Two reasons come up, and neither is that Spark is bad at email.

The first is the AI. Spark added an assistant to an existing client rather than building around one. If what you want is an inbox that drafts replies in your voice, sorts mail before you see it and chases the threads nobody answered, that is a different product shape.

The second is narrower than people expect: a lot of Spark users only ever open it on a Mac. Spark's biggest advantage is that it is the same app on Android and Windows as on iPhone. If you never use that, you are choosing among a much wider set of tools, including several that are Mac and iOS only.

One thing Spark does that almost nothing else on this list matches: on Spark's pricing page (read September 22, 2026), the free plan includes "Smart Inbox, Unlimited Email Accounts, Smart Notifications, Essential Email Productivity, Calendar". Unlimited accounts on a free tier is rare, and it is the single strongest argument for staying.

How do Spark Mail alternatives compare on price?

Per user, USD, as shown on each vendor's pricing page on the dates above.

ToolMonthly billingAnnual billingFree plan or trial
Spark Plus / Pro$10 / $20$120 / $240 per yearFree plan, unlimited accounts
Canary Growth / Pro+$3 / $10$36 / $100 per yearFree forever plan
Shortwave Pro$18Not shownFree plan, 14-day trial on paid tiers
Slashy Professional$30$300 per year, $25 per month7-day trial, card required
Superhuman Starter / Business$30 / $40$25 / $33 per monthNo free plan
Apple Mail$0$0Free

Canary undercuts Spark at every tier: $3 against $10, and $100 a year against $240. If your reason for leaving Spark is price rather than capability, the comparison more or less ends there. Canary also sells Growth and Pro+ as one-time lifetime purchases covering up to five devices, which nothing else here offers.

An inbox that understands the next step

Slashy uses the context in your email and calendar to draft, schedule, remember, and follow through.

Which alternative drafts email in your voice?

This is where the list splits, because most of these tools do not.

Slashy learns your voice from the mail you have already sent and grounds each draft in the thread, the sender's history and the memories attached to that relationship. On Slashy's own usage data, the share of AI drafts a new user sends without editing starts near 30% on day one and passes 80% by day 30. That curve is the thing to watch during a trial, because a voice model that has seen a week of your mail is not the same product as one that has seen a month of it.

"I was spending more time orchestrating AI than actually replying. Now I approve more than I compose. It just reads my mind."

Michelle, The Prompting Company

Superhuman's Mail AI page (checked September 16, 2026) says its AI matches the voice and tone of emails you have already sent, and its Personalization article adds writing style settings, an About me section and a connected Knowledge Base on Business and Enterprise. Shortwave lists personalized AI writing and an AI memory you can ask to remember facts, with AI usage scaling by tier. Spark has an AI assistant on paid plans. Canary's AI features focus on writing help and summaries rather than a voice model trained on your sent mail. Apple Mail does not do this at all.

Which alternative keeps Spark's cross-platform reach?

Only two, properly. Canary Mail runs on macOS, iOS, Windows and Android, the same four as Spark, and connects to Gmail, Outlook, Exchange, iCloud, Yahoo, Zoho, ProtonMail and generic IMAP. Superhuman covers Mac, Windows, iOS, Android and the web, but only for Gmail and Outlook mailboxes.

Shortwave is Gmail only, and Slashy is built on Gmail and Google Workspace with Outlook.com and Microsoft 365 support in a limited web beta. If you keep a personal iCloud address, neither can be your only client, and that should rule them out before you compare a single feature. Apple Mail takes any IMAP or Exchange account but only runs on Apple hardware.

What to choose if...

  • You are leaving because Spark got expensive: Canary Mail, at $3 a month or $36 a year.
  • You want unlimited accounts for free and nothing else changed: stay on Spark; its free plan is still the best of these.
  • You want the AI to draft, triage and chase replies for you, and you are on Gmail: Slashy.
  • You mostly want to ask questions about old mail: Shortwave.
  • You want speed and keyboard control across Gmail and Outlook: Superhuman.
  • You only ever used Spark on a Mac and want to stop paying: Apple Mail.
