Shortwave Alternatives in 2026: 5 AI Email Clients Compared

Shortwave is a Gmail-only client built around AI search, with a Free plan, Pro at $18 and team tiers from $30 to $120 per seat. The five alternatives worth a look are Slashy, Superhuman, Spark, Fyxer and Gmail with Gemini. Which one fits depends on whether you are leaving for Outlook support, for AI that runs the inbox rather than searches it, or for a lower price at the tier you actually need.
Shortwave is a well-made product, and this page treats it that way. Every claim about it links to a Shortwave page with the date we read it, and it gets credit for what it documents. Prices for every tool were read from the vendor's own pricing page in a browser on September 16, 2026, with monthly and annual billing listed separately where the vendor shows both.
Why look for a Shortwave alternative?
Three reasons come up on our onboarding calls, and none of them is that Shortwave is bad at email.
The first is provider. Shortwave is Gmail only. If your company is on Microsoft 365, or one team is on Outlook while the rest is on Google Workspace, the tool cannot follow you.
The second is the tier ladder. On Shortwave's pricing page (checked September 16, 2026), the Free plan carries basic intelligence, a limited AI usage quota and 90 days of AI search history; Pro is $18; Business at $30 per seat adds 5 years of AI search history, 3 AI filters and team features; Premier at $45 adds unlimited history and 10 filters; Max at $120 adds 6x the AI usage and 50 filters. If the feature you want sits two tiers up, the relevant price is that tier, not the Free plan.
The third is what the AI is for. Shortwave's AI is strongest at search: ask a question, get an answer drawn from years of mail. Some people want the opposite, an AI that drafts, labels and follows up before they open the inbox, and only search when something goes missing. That is a different product shape, and it is the main reason people move.
One thing Shortwave does well that comes up on those same calls: it shows exactly when an email arrived and exact send and reply times within a thread, clearly, and a prospect trialing Slashy in June 2026 told us Slashy surfaced that less well. That is a real point in Shortwave's favor.

Two things stand out. Shortwave's Free plan is the only genuinely free full client here besides Spark, and if 90 days of AI search history is enough, nothing else on this list beats free. And at the paid end, Shortwave Premier at $45 costs more than Slashy, Superhuman Starter or Spark Pro, so the comparison that matters is Premier against those, not Free against them.
Slashy uses the context in your email and calendar to draft, schedule, remember, and follow through.
Which alternative drafts in your voice and remembers context?
Shortwave lists personalized AI writing and an AI memory you can ask to remember facts and preferences, with AI usage that scales by tier. The alternatives differ on what the draft is built from and where the memory lives.
Slashy learns your voice from the mail you send and grounds each draft in the full thread, the CRM record for the sender and the meeting notes and saved memories attached to that relationship. The memory system is the architecture, not a setting. On Slashy's own usage data, the share of AI drafts a new user sends without editing starts near 30% on day one and passes 80% by day 30; that curve is the thing to measure during a trial.

Superhuman's Mail AI page says its AI matches the voice and tone of emails you have already sent, and its Personalization article (checked September 16, 2026) adds writing style, an About me section and a connected Knowledge Base on the Business and Enterprise plans. Fyxer's pricing page says it drafts replies in your voice and, on Professional, lets you upload files to train it. Spark has an AI writing assistant on paid plans with auto drafts marked as coming. Gemini's "Help me write" in Gmail is generic and not trained on your sent mail.
Which alternative is best for a team?
Shortwave's team features (thread sharing, comments, assignees, shared labels, team read statuses) sit on Business and above, so a team of five is $150 a month before Premier. Superhuman lists team collaboration on every plan. Slashy covers the founder and operator version of a team, meaning shared inboxes, comments and mentions, team read receipts and a calendar sidebar with a multi-person view, on the single $25 to $30 plan. Spark has essential collaboration on Plus and advanced on Pro. Fyxer's Professional plan handles multiple inboxes for one person rather than a shared queue. Which alternative works with Outlook?
This is the first question to answer, because it removes options before any feature comparison starts. Superhuman is a full client for Gmail and Outlook. Spark supports Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Exchange, Yahoo and IMAP. Fyxer sits on Gmail or Outlook. Slashy, like Shortwave, is Gmail and Google Workspace only, so a Microsoft 365 company should compare Superhuman, Spark and Fyxer and leave Slashy off the list today.
What to choose if...
- You are leaving because you need Outlook: Superhuman, Spark or Fyxer.
- You want the AI to run the inbox, not just search it: Slashy, which triages, drafts and follows up from one memory on one plan.
- You want to keep Shortwave's price but need Outlook or more providers: Spark Plus at $10.
- You want drafts and triage without leaving the inbox you have: Fyxer.
- You mostly need AI search across years of Gmail: stay on Shortwave; Premier or Max is the best tool on this list for that job.
- You want to run email from iMessage, Slack or your own AI agent: Slashy, which includes an MCP server and messaging control.
