Shortwave vs Superhuman in 2026: Which One Wins?

These two get compared constantly, and usually badly, because they are aimed at different problems that happen to share a category name. One was built so you can ask your mail questions. The other was built so you can clear it in half the time. Picking between them is mostly a question of which of those two frustrations you actually have.

What is the difference between Shortwave and Superhuman?

Shortwave is a Gmail client built around an AI assistant that searches and reasons over your mail history. Its paid tiers are graded by how much AI you get: which model, how far back the AI can search, and how many threads it can pull into a single answer.

Superhuman is a keyboard-first client for Gmail and Microsoft 365, built around speed, with AI layered on top. Its pricing is graded by team features rather than AI volume, and the heavier AI sits on the Business tier.

The practical difference: Shortwave charges you more for deeper AI recall, Superhuman charges you more for the advanced AI and team controls. Neither structure is wrong. They just bill for different things.

How do Shortwave and Superhuman compare on price?

At the entry point Shortwave is the cheaper product by a wide margin, and the free tier is a real one rather than a trial. What the low tiers cost you is AI depth. Free caps AI search at 90 days and 15 threads per question. Pro raises that to three years and 50 threads.

Which one has better AI search?

Shortwave, and it is not close. Search history is the axis its entire pricing ladder is built on: 90 days on Free, three years on Pro, five years on Business, unlimited on Premier and Max. The AI Intelligence levels run Basic (Claude Haiku 4.5), Standard (Claude Sonnet 4.6), Advanced (Claude Sonnet 4.6 with adaptive thinking) and Expert (Claude Opus 4.6 with adaptive thinking).

Superhuman has Ask AI, which its product page describes as answering across your inbox, calendar and the web, with examples like "where's the offsite" (Superhuman, read September 30, 2026). That is a genuinely capable search. It is not marketed or priced as an archive-research tool the way Shortwave's is.

If your recurring problem is "what did we agree with this customer eighteen months ago", Shortwave is built for you.

Which one is better at drafting?

Both draft from your sent mail, and both do it well enough that this should not be the deciding factor.

Superhuman documents that its AI "matches the voice and tone in the emails you've already sent, applying that to everything it creates", plus Instant Reply, which has a draft waiting on arriving mail, and Write with Voice for dictating on mobile. It also auto-writes the follow-up when a thread needs one.

Shortwave documents Personalized AI writing that learns your style from sent email, Instant AI replies, and an AI memory you direct by asking the assistant to remember facts and preferences.

The difference is who does the remembering. Shortwave's memory is a place you put things. Superhuman's personalization is inferred from your sent folder. Neither documents a store that builds up on its own from the mail you send.

What about provider support and platforms?

Superhuman is built for teams on Gmail or Outlook. Shortwave is Gmail and Google Workspace only. If any part of your company is on Microsoft 365, that single line decides the comparison before you reach a feature table.

Where does Slashy fit?

Slashy is the third option people are usually weighing alongside these two, so here is the honest placement rather than a pitch.

Slashy costs the same as Superhuman and more than Shortwave's Pro tier, and it is the youngest product of the three. What it does differently is the memory column: instead of asking you to record facts or inferring tone from your sent folder alone, it builds up a picture of who you talk to, how you write to each of them, and what was decided in earlier threads, and it does that continuously. • You want to interrogate years of mail: Shortwave, Premier or Max for unlimited AI search history.
