Notion Mail shut down on September 22, 2026. Your email history is safe in Gmail, but drafts, scheduled emails, snippets and auto label instructions lived only in Notion Mail and had to be exported by September 21. The five realistic replacements are Slashy, Shortwave, Superhuman, Spark and Gmail with Gemini; which one fits depends on whether you want the AI to run the inbox or just tidy it.
If you opened Notion Mail this week and found a shutdown notice instead of your inbox, here is where things stand. Notion Mail always synced two ways with Gmail, so nothing you sent or received is gone. What is gone is the client: the views, the AI auto labels you wrote as prompts, the snippets and the scheduled sends. This page covers what happened, what you can still recover, and which replacement is worth your time.
What happened to Notion Mail?
Notion announced the shutdown on June 25, 2026 and set the date for September 22. Notion's own explanation, reported by TechCrunch the same day, was that more than half of Notion Mail users were managing email without ever opening the inbox, and that the company was going all in on agents to run email instead of maintaining a client. Notion Mail had only been generally available since April 2025, built on the Skiff team Notion acquired in 2024.
Per Notion's help center, September 21 was the last day to save anything, and unsaved data was deleted on the 22nd. Gmail AI connectors and mail blocks inside Notion pages keep working; only the inbox product is gone.
What did I need to export, and what stays in Gmail?
Four things lived only in Notion Mail, per the same help page:

Everything else, meaning every message, label and thread, is already in Gmail because of the two-way sync. That is the good news: any replacement that connects to Gmail sees your full history on day one. The habit you lose is the Notion-style view of the inbox. No replacement below reproduces it exactly, and the honest advice is to pick the tool that solves the problem that made you try Notion Mail in the first place, which for most people was volume, not aesthetics.
What is the best Notion Mail alternative?

Superhuman puts custom auto labels, auto drafts and Ask AI on its Business tier at $40 monthly or $33 annually, and its Mail AI page describes auto archiving of marketing and cold pitches. Spark's pricing page lists auto drafts and auto labels as coming soon rather than shipped, so it is the weakest match on this specific point. Gmail with Gemini has no prompt-based labels; you rebuild them as classic filters.
Which alternative works with Outlook?
Notion Mail was Gmail only, so most readers of this page are on Gmail and every tool above applies. If your company is moving to Microsoft 365, the shortlist narrows to Superhuman (a full client for Gmail and Outlook) and Spark (Gmail, Outlook, iCloud, Exchange, Yahoo and IMAP). Slashy and Shortwave are Gmail and Google Workspace only, and Slashy is not an option for an Outlook mailbox today.
