Mimestream Review 2026: Pricing, iOS Beta and AI
A fair Mimestream review for 2026: the native Mac Gmail app at $49.99 a year, what it does well, the iOS beta, and why it ships no AI drafting of its own.

Mimestream is a native Mac email app built on the Gmail API, and it is one of the best ways to use Gmail on a Mac. It costs $49.99 a year or $4.99 a month for all your Google accounts, with a 14-day trial and no card. It supports Gmail only, has no iPhone app outside a private beta, and documents no AI drafting of its own. Buy it for speed and a real Mac interface, not for AI.

We build Slashy, an AI email client that some Mimestream users also consider, so read this with that in mind. Every claim about Mimestream below comes from its own homepage, pricing page, FAQ, roadmap and release notes, read in a browser on October 13, 2026 and linked inline. Where Mimestream does something better than we do, we say so.
What is Mimestream?
Mimestream is a Mac-only email client made for Gmail. Its homepage sums it up as "Made for Mac. Optimized for Gmail." Instead of talking to Gmail over IMAP the way Apple Mail and most older clients do, it syncs through the Gmail API, so Gmail's own features show up as native Mac controls: categories, labels with their colors, server-side filters, aliases and vacation responses. The app runs on macOS 12 or newer, and its release notes say future versions will require macOS 14.
It is a small, focused company product. The latest stable version on the release page is 1.10.8, from September 4, 2026, and updates have shipped every few weeks through the summer.
What does Mimestream do well?
It feels like a Mac app because it is one. Keyboard shortcuts, multiple windows, a menu bar extra, swipe gestures, system notifications, Continuity Camera and image markup are all on the feature list, and the app is built for Apple Silicon. If you have been running Gmail in a browser tab, this is the change you will notice first.
Gmail features are first-class, not translated. Because it uses the Gmail API, Mimestream handles labels, categories and filters the way Gmail does. You can manage your server-side Gmail filters from inside the app, send from any configured alias, and respond to calendar invitations while seeing your Google or Apple calendars beside the invite.
Multiple Google accounts are handled well. You can add every Google account, view them as one unified inbox or keep them separate, group them into profiles, give each account a color, and set working hours so work mail stays quiet in the evening. Focus filters let a macOS Focus mode hide profiles you do not want to see. Our unified inbox comparison recommends it to Mac users who want a native Gmail client with an optional merged view.
Privacy is a design decision. Mimestream says it "only stores your data and tokens on your device" and connects directly to the Gmail API "without going through any intermediary sync service." It also blocks trackers from more than 75 common services. If you do not want a vendor's servers sitting between you and your mail, that is a real reason to pick it.
What does Mimestream cost?
From mimestream.com/pricing, checked October 13, 2026:
| Plan | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Individual | $49.99 per year, or $4.99 per month | All your Google accounts, up to 5 devices, free family sharing |
| Group | $49.99 per seat per year | Everything in Individual, plus centralized billing and seat management |
| Trial | 14 days free | No credit card required |
There is no free plan and no one-time purchase. The pricing FAQ says "a subscription license is the only purchase option available for Mimestream." Even so, at about $4 a month on annual billing it is one of the cheapest paid email clients you can buy, and family sharing makes it cheaper still for a household.
For comparison, Slashy is $30 per user per month, or $25 a month billed annually, with a 7-day trial that needs a card. That gap is real. What the extra money buys is covered in the AI section below.
Is there a Mimestream app for iPhone?
Not publicly, yet. Mimestream's FAQ says: "We do not have an iOS version, but we are actively working on it," and adds that a TestFlight beta will come before any public release. Its roadmap is a step further along: it lists "Mimestream for iOS and iPadOS" as in private beta "with around 500 users," with a waitlist to join.
The roadmap also explains one reason it is taking time. Mimestream syncs over the Gmail API but "currently relies on IMAP for push," which the roadmap calls "not feasible on iOS." It plans a new push model with a relay service that would carry only "new email" events, not message content.
If you need the same client on your phone today, this matters. Slashy, Superhuman, Shortwave and Spark all ship iPhone apps now; our AI email apps for iPhone guide compares them.
Slashy uses the context in your email and calendar to draft, schedule, remember, and follow through.
Does Mimestream have AI?
Mimestream documents no AI features of its own. The homepage has no AI drafting, summaries, triage or AI search; its triage tools are Gmail's own categories, labels, filters and snooze. The one AI touchpoint we found is Apple's: the September 4, 2026 release notes fix "The Writing Tools toolbar button is missing from the compose window" on macOS 27, so Apple Intelligence Writing Tools are available while you compose. Those proofread and rewrite text on request. They are not trained on your sent mail.
This is a choice, not an oversight, and plenty of people want exactly that. It also marks the line between Mimestream and an AI-native client. Slashy writes drafts in your voice from a memory that learns from the mail you send and receive, sorts incoming mail into seven labels before you see it, and tracks who has not replied. On Slashy's own usage data, the share of AI drafts a new user sends without editing starts near 30% on day one and passes 80% by day 30.
"The first email client that understands my style and lets me respond faster and more naturally."

If you write fewer than a few dozen emails a day, you may not need any of that, and Mimestream's speed is the better deal. If most of your day is replying, the AI is the part that saves time.

Is Mimestream worth it in 2026?
Yes, for a specific person: a Mac user on Gmail who wants the fastest native client, cares about keeping mail off third-party servers, and does not want AI writing for them. At $49.99 a year with family sharing, it is easy to justify, and the 14-day trial needs no card.
It is the wrong buy if you also need Outlook, if you want the same app on your iPhone this month, or if the reason you are shopping is that replying takes too long. Mimestream makes reading and organizing Gmail faster. It does not write for you.
