TL;DR

You cannot add an Outlook account to Gmail on the web, and Gmail's web feature for pulling in other accounts ends in January 2027. To read Gmail and Outlook together on a Mac and iPhone, use a client that connects to both directly: Apple Mail, the Gmail app on your phone, or a unified client such as Slashy.

Gmail and Outlook in One Inbox on Mac and iPhone

The usual advice for this pairing, "just add Outlook to Gmail," stopped being right some time ago, and most guides still repeat it. A Gmail address and an Outlook address are the most common two-account setup there is: a personal Gmail and a work Microsoft 365 mailbox, or an Outlook.com address you kept from college. This page is about reading and answering both from one place on the devices most people use, a Mac and an iPhone. For the wider question of juggling accounts, see our guide to managing multiple email accounts in one inbox.

Can you add an Outlook account to Gmail?

Not in a browser. Google's guide to reading mail from other accounts, read October 6, 2026, says you cannot add an Outlook account to Gmail on your computer, though the Gmail app can. On the web, the route Gmail used to offer was POP, and Google says that is ending: its page on Gmailify and POP changes states that after the first quarter of 2026 the feature "no longer supports new users" and existing users can keep using it until January 2027.

Replying has the same clock on it. Google's Send mail as page says that from January 2027 Gmail will no longer support Send as for third-party addresses such as @outlook.com. So even where an old setup still pulls Outlook mail into Gmail, the replies from your Outlook address are on borrowed time.

What is left on a Mac and iPhone?

Three real options, and they differ in how much of the work is merging mail versus actually helping with it.

Apple lists the account types Mail on Mac accepts as "iCloud, Gmail (Google), Exchange, school, work, or other", read October 6, 2026. Apple Mail is free and already on both devices, which makes it the right first stop if all you want is two inboxes in one app.

How does a unified client handle Gmail and Outlook together?

It connects to each account on its own, with each provider's own sign-in, so nothing depends on Gmail pulling in Outlook mail.

In Slashy, you add the second account under Settings, Account, Connected Accounts, then choose Connect Gmail or Connect Outlook. Sign in with Google or Microsoft and approve the same permissions as the first. According to the multi-account help page, the first sync takes 2 to 15 minutes depending on inbox size. On iOS, you pick Outlook from the Add account options.

Once both are connected, All mode puts them in one list. The help page spells out what that does:

  • Importance labels combine mail from both accounts under each tab.
  • Search covers both accounts at once.
  • Each thread carries a small colored badge for the inbox that received it.
  • Replies automatically go out from the account that received the email.

A few things stay separate, by design: calendars, signatures, contacts, automations, and Gmail labels versus Outlook folders. The point is that a work signature does not leak into a personal reply. One trap that the docs call out: a brand-new email defaults to whichever account you viewed last, so check the From line before you send.

What works differently for Outlook than for Gmail?

Slashy works with Gmail, Google Workspace, Outlook.com, and Microsoft 365, on web, desktop, and iOS. The Outlook connection guide lists where the two providers diverge:

  • Folders and categories show up as labels in the sidebar, and archiving moves a message to your Outlook Archive folder.
  • Signatures are added by hand. Microsoft does not share your Outlook signature with other apps, so you set one under Settings, Account, Signature.
  • Cloud-link attachments cannot be downloaded inside Slashy and appear as "Cloud link"; open the original in Outlook for the file.
  • Calendar carries events, invitations and RSVPs, and Outlook calendars use native Microsoft Teams links.
  • One Outlook mailbox belongs to one Slashy account.

Those are the details that decide whether a client feels native on the Microsoft side, and they are worth reading before you commit.

"I was spending more time orchestrating AI than actually replying. Now I approve more than I compose. It just reads my mind."

Which should you pick?

  • You only want two inboxes in one app, for free: Apple Mail on both devices.
  • You live in Gmail already and add Outlook on your phone: the Gmail app with IMAP, which Google says is staying.
  • You want AI drafts in your voice, triage, and search that spans both accounts: a unified client. Slashy is ours, at $30 per user per month or $25 billed annually, with a 7-day trial that needs a card.
