Is AI Email Secure? Does It Train on Your Data?

Email is the most sensitive inbox most people own. It holds contracts, board materials, investor updates, customer records, and password resets for everything else. So before you hand it to an AI assistant, the right question is not whether the AI is useful. It is whether the AI is safe, and specifically whether your email becomes training data for someone else's model. As Slashy's CTO, this is the objection I hear most, so here is the honest version of how to evaluate it.

Is AI email secure?

AI email is secure when the provider treats your messages as data to process, not data to learn from. The security of any AI email client comes down to three things: how your data is encrypted, whether it is used to train models, and how long it is retained after a task is done.

A secure AI email client encrypts data both at rest and in transit, carries independent compliance certifications, scopes its access narrowly through OAuth, and contractually prevents its AI providers from retaining or training on your content. An insecure one does some subset of that and hopes you do not ask which parts.

Does AI email train on my data?

This is the question that actually matters, and the answer depends entirely on the vendor. There is no rule that forces an AI email client to keep your messages out of a training set. Some providers reserve the right to use your content to improve their models. Read the data processing terms, not the marketing page.

What does zero data retention mean?

Zero data retention means the AI provider processes your request and keeps nothing afterward. Modern AI email clients call large language models to draft and classify. The question is what those model providers do with the text after they return an answer.

With zero data retention, the prompt and the output are not stored on the AI provider's side once the response is delivered. Nothing is logged for training, nothing is kept for later review, and nothing lingers in a vendor's systems waiting to leak. How does Slashy protect my email?

What security certifications should an AI email client have?

The two certifications that matter most for an AI email client on Gmail are SOC 2 Type II and CASA Tier 2. Together they cover both general security practice and the specific bar Google sets for apps touching Workspace data.

Use the checklist below to evaluate any vendor. For each row, ask the vendor directly and accept only a clear answer. Vague replies are themselves an answer.

If a vendor cannot give a plain yes to the training and retention rows, treat that as a no. Those are the two places where the marketing and the contract most often diverge.

What questions should I ask an AI email vendor?

Five questions separate a serious security posture from a hopeful one. Ask them in order and write down the answers.

Do you train any model on my email? The only safe answer is no, with no carve-outs for "improving the service." Slashy does not train AI on your data.
